Blende and Blende Youth

Middleboulevard

At photokina 2008 in Cologne, “Blende” — Europe’s biggest photo competition for amateur photographers — is presenting a brilliant array of fascinating photographs. The exhibition, which will feature a selection of the best works submitted for the German newspaper reader photography competition “Blende,“ will be presented on the Boulevard at the exhibition center. The pictures taken by the dedicated photographers presented at “Blende” have a special quality that is well worth seeing. The more than 70 images from the “Blende” competition that will be displayed at photokina 2008 are truly remarkable. The exhibition will be accompanied by a “Blende” catalogue featuring more than 60 pages dedicated to these images, in recognition that photography is the universal language that everyone understands. Brief commentaries on the individual themes and an offering of photography tips round out the “Blende” catalogue.

Pictures of Science

Photographs are intermediaries between scientists and the general public. They capture the interest of people from all professions and age groups and offer them glimpses into laboratories that would otherwise be closed to them. To bring the fascinating world of scientific research within the reach of a broad audience, the news magazine Nachrichtenmagazin FOCUS and the German Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (VFA) initiated the photography competition "Images of Research" in 2005.

The organizers are looking for the most spectacular and beautiful images from all areas of science — including the fields of biology, medicine, physics and astronomy. Scientists, professional photographers and ambitious amateurs are invited to submit their photographs in the categories "The Fascination of Research" and "The Faces of Research".
Category 1: The Fascination of Research
This category comprises photographs that depict processes and phenomena in the natural sciences. It includes photographs produced via various imaging processes such as scanning electron microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging and x-ray technology, as well as photographs created via conventional technology for scientific purposes.
Category 2: The Faces of Research
The photographs in this category focus on the people who do scientific research. They depict researchers in all their curiosity and their passionate search for the secrets of nature, or people who have been helped by scientific research.
The jury
The jury consists of prominent professionals from various fields: journalists, scientists, photographers and representatives of FOCUS magazine. The jury will choose the best photo in each of the two categories "The Fascination of Research" and "The Faces of Research". Each of the winners will receive €10,000 in prize money.

Canon ProFashional Photo Award 2008

Hall 6, stand: A51

Canon ProFashional Photo Award – Photography goes fashion
This event is the most important professional fashion photography competition in Germany and has become a genre trendsetter in its six years of existence. The Canon ProFashional Photo Award is unusual in that it boasts a completely free forum. Fashion is intentionally defined in a very broad sense in this competition. From designer fashion to all kinds of street wear and fanciful style experiments, everything that’s cutting-edge and worth seeing will be showcased here.   As the winning photographs show, the possibilities offered by digital technologies have noticeably expanded the creative spectrum of the medium. The exhibition will display the winning images along with 28 other selected works redefining fashion photography. Artful compositions out of skin and hair, fabric and shoes — in short with everything that makes fashion so fascinating.
